Vermont Kids Against Tobacco (VKAT)
2010 - Red Ribbon Week (October 25 - 29) PDF Print E-mail

Red Ribbon Week was a success.  Mrs. Allen's first grade class won Red, White, and Blue Day; Mrs. Wimberg's fourth grade class won Team Jersey Day; Mrs. McNamara's third grade class won Crazy Sock Day, with 100% participation; Mrs. Allen's first grade class won Crazy Hair Day; and Mr. Berger's seventh grade class won Twin Day.  Students in grades 4 - 8 had fun at the dance celebrating the close of Red Ribbon Week.  We exceeded our goal for the food drive, 350 items were collected for the two area food shelves, Ascutney and Perkinsville.  Thank you to everyone who participated.

Last week WeKAT members were busy making Quit Kits for the Great American Smokeout, which is on Thursday, November, 18th.

Students in grades 4 - 8 are invited to participate in WeKat,Weathersfield Kids Against Tobacco. WeKat, formerly VKAT, is a community based prevention program focusing on positvely impacting youth in Weathersfield.  Our goals are to increase student awareness on the dangers of alcohol, drug and tobacco use, and to encourage members to be creative and assist in developing confidence to stand-up for important issues regarding their health and well being.

Smoke Free Parks and Recreation Areas in Weathersfield PDF Print E-mail

On April 1st Heidi, Jessica, and Rand appeared in front of the Weathersfield Town Select Board to ask for their support in making all park and recreation areas tobacco free.  On Thursday, June 3rd Heidi, Jessica, Rand, and Kaycee went to Select Board Meeting.  The Select Board agreed to make a policy to keep all park and recreation areas in the Town of Weathersfield tobacco free.  VKAT members will work with Courtney McKaig to create signs to post in all park and recreation areas.

Congratulations VKAT members for a job well done!

vkat-1On January, 27th  Heidi, Jessica, and Meghan representedvkat-2 Weathersfield VKAT at the State House. VKAT teams from  throughout the state participated in this event.  The girls gave a presentation to Governor Douglas highlighting the activities the group has accomplished. Heidi presented a graph detailing the amount of cigarette butts they collected from around the school, library, Town Hall, and Route 5 on the last Green Up Day.  Jessica presented the magnets we designed and the Tee Shirts we made for Green Up Day.  Meghan presented the book marks the members designed and made.
