New Dress Code PDF Print E-mail

Dear Students, Parents & Faculty,

At the Weathersfield School Board meeting on January 19, 2009, I requested that the board allow me to modify the current student dress code.  The current Weathersfield School Dress Code is very specific in some areas but vague in other areas.  I asked the board to approve the addendum:  “Any other item that is not specified in the Dress Code, but deemed inappropriate for school by administration or their designee”.  My immediate concern is students who “decorate” their arms and hands with magic marker and t-shirts with inappropriate sayings or graphics. The new Dress Code will read as follows:
1.  Students are expected to dress appropriately for the kinds of activities and for weather conditions.
2.  Halter tops, tank tops, spaghetti strap shirts, loose revealing muscle shirts, cut off t-shirts, midriff shirts, and spandex are not permitted in school.  (Underwear should not be showing.)
3.  Shorts will be permitted.  The appropriate length for shorts as well as skirts is four to six inches above the knee.
4.  Footwear must be worn at all times.  Sneakers need to be worn to participate in gym.  No flip flops or Addidas type sandals should be worn at school unless it’s a special day like field day.  High heel shoes should not be worn by students.
5.  Hats should not be worn inside at school.

** Any other item that is not specified in the Dress Code, but deemed inappropriate for school by administration or their designee will not be permitted in school.  Students will not be allowed to return to class until the dress code issue is corrected.

Of course, the responsibility for compliance with the Dress Code starts with the parents and students and is reinforced in school by the staff and the administration.

It is certainly not our intent to curtail creativity or individuality of dress, but to keep the educational distraction to a minimum.  If you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to call.

Sincerely,
Donald R. Hart, Interim Principal
