What "Dewey" Do in Library?
Our library time is divided up into two parts. Grades K-2 have storytime every week, followed by a short class lesson or activity. Each class is given around 15 minutes to browse, select, and check out books. Grades 3-8 begin with a class lesson, which sometimes includes a read-aloud, followed by free time for browsing and checking out books whenever possible.
The library curriculum is guided by the Vermont framework and the American Association of School Librarian's Standards for the 21st Century Learner. Topics we cover include: library oragnization and usage; selecting, evaluating, and utilizing print and electronic information resources; note-taking and citations; using Web 2.0 tools for information gathering, organizing, and sharing; and literature appreciation and genre study.
Our students are exposed to unprecedented amounts of information, available literally at their fingertips. The library curriculum is designed to help students develop the skills they need to access, analyze, and utilize this abundance of information safely and effectively.
